Police Arraign Lawyer Victor Giwa for Alleged Forgery to Mislead AGF

The Nigeria Police have arraigned Abuja-based lawyer, Victor Giwa, before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo, Abuja, over allegations of attempting to mislead the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) into dropping a criminal case.

Giwa and a co-defendant, Bukola, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, forgery, and impersonation. The charge, marked CR/150/25, alleges that the duo forged a letter purportedly from the chambers of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Awa Kalu, aimed at convincing the AGF to halt a pending criminal matter.

The prosecution claims the forged letter, dated June 28, 2024, was titled “Urgent and Solemn Appeal to Suspend the Arraignment of Our Colleague Victor Giwa on Charge Number: CR/222/2023”. It was addressed to the AGF and printed on the official letterhead of Awa U. Kalu (SAN), requesting the suspension of Giwa’s scheduled July 2, 2024, arraignment before Justice Bature of the High Court in Maitama, Abuja.

The letter allegedly argued for the withdrawal of charges against Giwa in the interest of justice, fairness, and equity, falsely presenting itself as an official request from Kalu’s law firm.

Giwa is already facing separate charges alongside property developer Cecil Osakwe and others over alleged illegal eviction, threats to life, criminal intimidation, and property damage valued at N300 million.

In the present matter, Giwa and Bukola are charged with conspiracy under Section 97 of the Penal Code Act, 2004, and face accusations of dishonest execution of a document and false personation of a legal practitioner.

The prosecution is led by Rabiu Usman of the Legal/Prosecution Section under the Inspector General of Police.

Arraignment before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie was stalled on Monday due to the absence of the defendants. Defence counsel U.J. Udo informed the court that Giwa was attending his sister’s burial and requested an adjournment.

Justice Onwuegbuzie granted the request and rescheduled the arraignment for September 15, 2025, warning that no further delays would be entertained.
