Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) hastily evacuated at least 15 corpses of their members after a failed midnight attack on New Marte, Borno State.
This was revealed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, via a post on his X account on Tuesday.
Citing credible sources, Makama stated that the insurgents, riding on about 20 motorcycles, launched a coordinated assault on troops stationed in New Marte at approximately 1:35 a.m.
The attackers reportedly arrived with a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED), likely intended to breach the military base’s defences.
However, they were overpowered by the superior firepower of Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai, with support from the Nigerian Air Force.
Makama noted that the VBIED was abandoned as the terrorists fled under sustained gunfire and aerial strikes.
