Police Arrest Officer Over Fatal Shooting of Ibadan Student

Hobnob News – The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police officer involved in the fatal shooting of 14-year-old secondary school student, Kehinde Alade, during a traffic enforcement operation in Ibadan.

The incident, which occurred around 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice. The command’s spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso, released a statement in Ibadan, revealing that the officer responsible for discharging the firearm—along with other team members—has been taken into custody.

Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Adenola, has ordered a thorough investigation, to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). Osifeso emphasized that the officer is cooperating with investigators and that the process will be transparent, with findings made public.

The command expressed deep regret over the tragic event, which unfolded during a joint operation with the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA). According to Osifeso, the team had attempted to stop a black Honda Accord (registration FST 639 JJ) driven by the deceased’s father, Mr. Odunayo Alade, for driving against traffic.

Rather than complying, the driver allegedly accelerated toward the officers, colliding with two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck. In a bid to prevent further chaos and protect road users, barricades were placed to stop the vehicle, but the driver reportedly broke through them.

“Given the erratic behavior, officers suspected criminal activity or a possible abduction,” Osifeso said.

A pursuit ensued, during which a police corporal fired at the vehicle’s tyres in an attempt to bring it to a halt. Tragically, the bullet missed and struck young Kehinde Alade, who was seated in the rear seat.

He was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

The police command extended its heartfelt condolences to Kehinde’s family and reiterated its dedication to justice and accountability.

“The Oyo State Police Command remains committed to transparency, professionalism, and justice. We will not shield anyone from due process,” Osifeso assured.
