Police operatives in Katsina State have successfully rescued five kidnapped victims following a fierce exchange of gunfire with armed bandits along the Funtua-Gusau road in Faskari Local Government Area.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the rescue on Tuesday through its spokesperson, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, who revealed that the operation took place on Monday night, May 19, after the command received a distress call at 9:37 p.m. reporting an abduction incident at Unguwar-Basau.
The victims — two drivers and three passengers — were abducted while traveling in a Hummer bus and a white Mendez truck when they were ambushed by suspected bandits operating along the notorious highway.
Responding swiftly, a police Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) patrol team was deployed to the scene. According to ASP Aliyu, the operatives engaged the attackers in a heated gun duel, forcing them to retreat due to superior firepower and tactical coordination.
“All five victims were rescued alive,” Aliyu said, adding that four of them sustained injuries during the abduction ordeal but are currently receiving treatment at Sheme Primary Health Centre and are said to be responding well.
The Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, Bello Shehu, has commended the swift and courageous response of the officers involved in the operation.
“This is another testament to the dedication and professionalism of our men in confronting the threats posed by criminal elements. The fight against banditry is ongoing, and we will not relent,” CP Shehu stated.
He also called on residents to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
Ongoing Efforts Against Banditry
Katsina State, like many others in Nigeria’s North-West region, continues to battle with challenges posed by banditry and kidnapping, particularly along rural and inter-state routes. Monday night’s successful rescue underscores the efforts of security agencies in reclaiming public confidence and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
The command assured that further operations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and dismantle their criminal networks in the area.
