Panic erupted in Awka, Anambra State, when Reverend Father Anthony Udogu of the Catholic Diocese of Awka suddenly collapsed and died while playing lawn tennis.
The Diocesean Chancellor, Rev Fr Charles Ndubuisi, confirmed the priest’s death in an official statement issued on Tuesday.
“With faith in the resurrection of the Lord, the Catholic Diocese of Awka announces the passing of our brother priest, Rev Fr Anthony Udogu, who died suddenly early today,” the statement said.
Ndubuisi explained that Fr Udogu collapsed during the tennis game and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
At the time of his death, Fr Udogu served as the Parish Priest of St Francis of Assisi, Awka, and as the Dean of Awka Deanery II.
The statement noted that the late priest was highly respected for his leadership, dedication to pastoral duties, and commitment to community development.
The Catholic Diocese extended its condolences to his family, parishioners, and all who mourn his loss, adding that burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.
“May the soul of Rev Fr Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord,” the statement concluded.
