Abuja, FCT | Sunday, May 18, 2025 — In a decisive move toward enhancing Nigeria’s pension framework, the House of Representatives, through its Committee on Pensions, has announced the convening of a two-day stakeholders engagement forum as part of broader legislative consultations aimed at amending the Pension Reform Act, 2014 (as amended).
The engagement, scheduled for Monday, May 19 to Tuesday, May 20, 2025, will take place at Conference Hall 0.28, House of Representatives New Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, commencing daily at 10:00 a.m.
The initiative is anchored on the legislative oversight powers granted under Section 88(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and arises from resolutions passed at plenary following two pivotal motions. These motions, which focused on the Administration of Pension Fund Assets and the Plight of Retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), led to an investigative hearing conducted by the Committee between September 2 and 11, 2024.
The upcoming engagement seeks to build on those findings by fostering open dialogue with relevant stakeholders—pension administrators, labour unions, retiree associations, regulatory bodies, and other critical actors in the pension ecosystem. The objective is to gather diverse inputs that will inform a comprehensive and inclusive legislative amendment process.
Chairman of the House Committee on Pensions, Rep. Hussaini Mohammed Jallo, while addressing journalists ahead of the event, reiterated the House’s commitment to social justice, transparency, and global best practices in the management of pension funds. According to him:
“The House Committee on Pensions is committed to reviewing and amending the Pension Reform Act, 2014, in a manner that prioritises the concerns of Nigerian retirees, promotes accountability, and aligns with global standards. This stakeholders engagement is a critical step in ensuring that our legislative efforts are participatory, forward-thinking, and rooted in the realities of those most affected.”
The Chairman further emphasized that the goal of the amendment is not just technical reform, but a human-centred policy shift that safeguards the dignity of labour and provides sustainable economic security for Nigerian workers beyond their years of active service.
This initiative is in line with the Legislative Agenda (2023–2027) of the 10th House of Representatives, which places a strong emphasis on strengthening the social sector, promoting inclusive governance, and enacting laws that directly impact the welfare and livelihoods of Nigerian citizens.
The House calls on all invited stakeholders and the general public to participate actively and contribute meaningfully to the deliberations, as the outcome of this engagement will play a defining role in shaping the future of pension administration in Nigeria.
