The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has announced plans by the FCT Administration to construct additional bus terminals in the Bwari and Gwagwalada area councils. This development is part of ongoing efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and enhance public safety across the territory.
Wike made the announcement during an inspection of the dualisation project from Ushafa to War College and Check Point Road in Bwari Area Council, as well as the Abuja International Conference Centre on Saturday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Wike-led administration had in 2024 awarded contracts for the construction of modern bus and taxi terminals in Mabushi, the Central Area, and Kugbo. The terminals in Mabushi and Kugbo are now completed and ready for commissioning, while work continues on the Central Area facility.
Speaking during the inspection, the minister explained that the move to build additional terminals in satellite towns like Bwari and Gwagwalada was aimed at ensuring that all areas of the FCT benefit from improved transportation services.
“We have agreed that we are going to construct one bus terminal in Gwagwalada and another in Bwari,” Wike stated. “This will enable people to board a taxi or bus from Bwari down to the city, either to the Mabushi Bus Terminal, Kugbo Terminal, or Central Area Bus Terminal. The same applies to Gwagwalada.”
He noted that the initiative would significantly boost public safety, allowing residents to travel without fear of falling victim to “one chance” criminals—fraudsters who pose as taxi drivers to rob unsuspecting passengers.
“By the time we have done that, people will be safe, and people will be secure,” Wike assured. “You can now go to any bus terminal, board a taxi, and go wherever you want without the fear of becoming a victim.”
The minister also issued a strong warning to residents, stressing that once the new terminals are operational, anyone who chooses to board vehicles from the roadside does so at their own risk.
“We have done the right thing by constructing bus terminals in strategic locations,” Wike said, urging residents to embrace the safer, more organized transport system being put in place.
