The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Felix Morka, yesterday dismissed concerns that the wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling APC was part of a plot to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Speaking to journalists, Morka stated that the APC respects Nigeria’s constitutional commitment to a multi-party democracy and has no intention of undermining the country’s pluralist political structure.
He pointed out that when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held power, it controlled over 28 states without facing similar accusations of pushing for a one-party system.
“Many of these people are coming in and saying, we want to be part of the process. We want to identify with that process. There’s nothing wrong with that,” Morka said. “And you know, that does not mean that we desire for Nigeria to then become a one-party system.”
He emphasized that the country’s Constitution, Electoral Act, and other legal frameworks strongly uphold a multi-party political structure. “We cannot as a party desire to go against the force of the Constitution,” he said. “To do that, you have to change a lot, which is nearly impossible to change.”
Morka further clarified that the APC’s primary concern is to protect its internal systems and strengthen its position, not to eliminate opposition. He dismissed the one-party narrative, asserting that those joining the APC do so willingly because they align with the party’s direction and governance style.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions and a flurry of defections from the PDP and Labour Party to the APC ahead of upcoming elections.
