Wikipedia editors have updated the biography of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to include a section outlining several public controversies and unproven allegations, igniting sharp reactions from both her supporters and critics.
The new additions cite past sexual harassment claims made by the senator, including allegations against former presidential aide Reno Omokri and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. None of the claims have resulted in formal charges or independent verification and are therefore labelled as “unproven” on the platform.
The update also references a recent controversy involving Dr. Sandra Duru, who, in a May 1st live broadcast, accused Akpoti of blackmail, manipulation, and exploiting harassment narratives. Though unresolved, Wikipedia editors included the claims with citations from media sources and a clear disclaimer about their current status.
A Wikipedia content moderation spokesperson explained, “When adding contentious content about living individuals, our priority is neutrality and reliable sourcing. Every entry is backed by verifiable reports, and unproven claims are clearly marked as such.”
Akpoti’s supporters have criticised the move as a calculated smear campaign, accusing political rivals of using Wikipedia to damage her reputation ahead of a possible 2027 bid. Her critics, however, argue that public figures who raise serious allegations must also be open to scrutiny.
The updated article has been flagged for review by Wikipedia’s Arbitration Committee, indicating potential revisions or removals in the near future.
