Ganduje, Wike Predict PDP’s Downfall as 2027 Looms

ABUJA — The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, have asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on the brink of collapse. They made this known on Monday, pointing to what they described as leadership failures and internal strife within the opposition party.

However, in a swift rebuttal, the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Adolphus Wabara, dismissed the claims, affirming that the PDP remains very much alive and will bounce back stronger ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ganduje, responding to comments by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido—who had predicted an eventual disintegration of the APC—described such assertions as “baseless and illogical.” In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje stated that the PDP is fading fast and that many of its members will soon seek refuge in the APC.

“In fact, Sule Lamido will likely be joining us soon because the PDP is losing ground rapidly,” Ganduje said. “With the wave of defections into our party and the solid leadership of President Bola Tinubu, the APC is poised for an even stronger performance in 2027.”

He reaffirmed his pride in leading what he termed the largest political party in Nigeria and Africa, expressing confidence in the APC’s continued rise.

Echoing this sentiment, Wike accused the PDP of repeating the same mistakes that cost it the 2023 presidential election. Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the FCT Minister warned that the party’s refusal to address internal divisions and its disregard for constitutional zoning arrangements could lead to its implosion.

He criticized PDP leaders for sidelining him due to his role in an APC-led government, despite the fact that other PDP figures had openly supported politicians in rival parties. Wike further questioned the party’s leadership direction and called out inconsistencies in its political strategy.

“In 2023, we warned the PDP about abandoning its own zoning principles. They ignored it and paid the price,” Wike stated. “Now, they’re repeating the same errors—seeking to manipulate the convention, exclude credible voices, and pretend everything is fine.”

He warned that selfish interests and insincerity among PDP leaders are eroding the party’s foundation. Wike praised Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who recently defected to the APC, for his boldness and sincerity, contrasting it with what he described as hypocrisy among PDP elites.

“Leadership matters. If there’s no transparency and sincerity, the party will collapse from within,” he said. “I’ve warned PDP governors. The only thing I’m guilty of is accepting a ministerial role under the APC.”

Wike also defended his record, insisting he is not breaking the PDP but working to uphold its constitution. He revealed that he recently met with suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who visited with two APC governors, but he expressed doubt about Fubara’s ability to restore peace.

“I told him I don’t believe he can genuinely make peace. I said that to his face,” Wike said, refusing to disclose more details of the meeting.

As the 2027 elections approach, both Wike and Ganduje emphasized the APC’s growing dominance while forecasting deeper cracks within the PDP if corrective actions are not urgently taken.
