Fubara’s Visit to Wike a Bold Move for Peace – Rivers Elders

A prominent member of the Rivers State Elders and Leaders Council and founding spokesman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, has hailed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as a strategic sacrifice aimed at restoring peace in Rivers State.

Speaking on the development, Sara-Igbe emphasized that Governor Fubara has consistently demonstrated a commitment to peaceful governance — a sharp contrast to what he described as Wike’s confrontational disposition.

“That meeting wasn’t meant for public discussion unless the FCT Minister chooses to disclose it,” Sara-Igbe stated. “In due time, the outcome will be known.”

He praised the governor for his maturity and willingness to compromise, stating, “Peace demands personal sacrifice. The governor has shown that he values harmony above ego. Leadership isn’t about pride — it’s about service, and Fubara has displayed that by reaching out.”

Confirming the encounter, Minister Wike acknowledged during a live media chat on Monday that Governor Fubara visited his Port Harcourt residence, accompanied by two governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and another unidentified individual.

“Yes, he visited. He came with two APC governors and one other person. He said he wants peace, and I also want peace,” Wike confirmed.

However, the FCT Minister attributed the political tensions surrounding Governor Fubara to what he described as “self-inflicted wounds,” claiming the governor failed to heed timely counsel from political allies.

“When the issues began, we called him. Governors Seyi Makinde, Ortom, Ikpeazu, and Ugwuanyi were present. We advised him to be humble and not let external influences derail his path,” Wike said.

He added, “We acknowledge he is the governor, but leadership should not mean forgetting those who supported you through thick and thin.”

On national issues, Wike also addressed the challenge of open grazing in the Federal Capital Territory, revealing ongoing efforts to resolve the situation. He noted that governance must be approached with caution and balance.

“A 100-hectare plot had previously been earmarked for grazing, but illegal encroachment has posed complications. We’re working to resolve this, but we must proceed wisely,” Wike added.
