MIn response to a growing wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), governors elected on the PDP platform are expected to convene an emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday to deliberate on the party’s future.
Hobnob News Nigeria has gathered that the last two weeks have been particularly turbulent for the opposition party, with high-profile exits shaking its political foundations. The most notable defection occurred on April 23, when Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, accompanied by his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in Delta, formally switched allegiance to the APC.
The development came just days after PDP governors gathered in Ibadan, Oyo State, where they expressed openness to coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections. During the meeting, the governors also distanced themselves from a coalition effort led by former PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Adding to the party’s woes, all three PDP-elected Senators from Kebbi State are reportedly on the verge of defecting to the APC, further depleting PDP’s representation at the national level.
Sources close to the matter revealed that, barring any last-minute changes, the emergency meeting is slated to be held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja. The gathering is expected to not only address the defections but also strategize ahead of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 27.
With internal cracks widening and the 2027 elections inching closer, Sunday’s meeting could be pivotal in shaping the direction and survival of the main opposition party.
