Time Out has included Lagos in its prestigious list of the world’s best cities for 2025, alongside Cape Town and Marrakech, making them the only African cities to earn the honour.
The annual ranking draws on surveys from thousands of city dwellers around the world, assessing daily life through factors such as food, nightlife, culture, and the sense of connection residents feel to their city. Insights from local experts are also incorporated to spotlight cities that are exciting to visit in the given year.
In the 2025 edition, Cape Town emerged as the global number one. Residents praised the city’s food scene, with 95% giving high ratings, while 97% said it made them feel happy. Time Out South Africa’s content director, Andrew Hallett, said Cape Town’s charm lies in its blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant lifestyle—where one can visit beaches, meet penguins, take in iconic landscapes, and enjoy cultural experiences all in a single day.
Marrakech followed as Africa’s second-highest ranked city at 37th. Celebrated for its warm hospitality and evolving culinary landscape, the Moroccan city continues to attract global interest. According to local expert Sally Kirby, Marrakech’s mix of tradition and modernity is fueling its growing popularity.
Lagos came in at 41st, recognised for its strong social energy and dynamic cultural scene. The survey revealed that 72% of Lagosians find it easy to make new friends and build social ties. As Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos remains a cultural powerhouse and a hub for music, creativity, and commerce, making it a standout on the African continent.
