Edo Government Issues Promotion Letters to 8,476 Teachers, Begins Recruitment Drive for Education Sector

The Edo State Government has commenced the issuance of promotion letters to no fewer than 8,476 teachers in public schools across the state, in a move aimed at boosting morale and enhancing educational outcomes.

This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, during a press briefing on Wednesday in Benin City. He explained that the promotion process, which began in February 2025, has reached its final stage with the distribution of letters to the affected teachers.

“This promotion exercise is part of our strategy to motivate teachers for optimal performance,” Iyamu said, adding that the state government remains committed to investing in education and improving the welfare of teachers.

He further stated that the promoted teachers will also benefit from the newly approved minimum wage of N75,000, announced by Governor Monday Okpebholo during the May Day celebrations. “On Workers’ Day, the governor raised the minimum wage from N70,000 to N75,000, and our teachers are among the beneficiaries,” he noted.

Iyamu also revealed ongoing efforts to absorb qualified contract teachers under the EdoSTAR program into permanent positions, emphasizing the government’s focus on ensuring only competent and qualified individuals are employed to teach in the state’s schools.

In a related development, the Commissioner announced that the government has started the recruitment process for 500 new teachers for basic and senior secondary schools, along with an additional 100 teachers for Technical Colleges.

“The goal is to strengthen the teaching workforce and ensure that our students receive both academic instruction and practical skills training,” Iyamu said. “Technical education is particularly important because it equips our youths with employable and entrepreneurial skills.”

Highlighting recent achievements of the Governor Okpebholo-led administration, Iyamu mentioned the substantial increase in the subvention to Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma—from N41 million to N500 million. He also noted the induction of 128 medical students and 810 nursing students from AAU, whose graduation ceremonies had been delayed under the previous administration.

Additionally, he cited the extensive renovation and rehabilitation of schools across the state’s three senatorial districts, and the provision of essential learning materials, including chairs, tables, and textbooks, as evidence of the government’s commitment to transforming the education sector.
