No fewer than 25 people died in a violent clash between suspected bandits and local vigilantes in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 4, 2025, in Dajin Madam forest, a border area between Bauchi and Plateau states.
Police spokesperson CSP Ahmed Wakil confirmed that a patrol team of hunters from Duguri and Gwana districts was ambushed around 5:40 a.m. during a routine security operation.
“The attack resulted in the deaths of nine vigilantes, five assailants, and 11 abducted civilians from Sabuwar Sara village caught in the crossfire,” Wakil stated.
He added that some civilians were killed while trying to escape. “A tactical team recovered the victims’ bodies, and a manhunt is underway to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed condemned the attack, calling it a *“heinous and senseless act of violence.”* In a statement by his media adviser, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor mourned the slain hunters, praising their bravery.
*“This tragic incident is a painful reminder of the persistent threats facing our rural communities,”* the statement read. *“We urge residents to support security agencies with credible intelligence as we intensify efforts to bring the culprits to justice.”*
The state government pledged to work closely with federal security forces to restore peace in the region.
