Edo State Government Demolishes NBM (AYE) National Headquarters in Benin

The Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, has commenced the demolition of buildings linked to cult groups in a renewed effort to tackle cult-related violence. On Tuesday, government officials confirmed that the national headquarters of the Neo Black Movement of Africa (NBM), popularly known as Aye, located in the Amagba area of Benin City, has been demolished.

This move follows a recent spate of cult clashes that have claimed lives and heightened insecurity in the state. The demolition is part of a broader crackdown targeting properties associated with known cult organisations.

Observers have commended the bold action, calling on other state governments to emulate Edo’s approach in dealing with cultism. “We will always praise leaders when they do well and call them out when needed,” a statement from civil society group Naija Confra read. “More bold actions like this are needed across Nigeria if cult violence is to reduce or end.”

Governor Okpebholo has reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring law and order and ensuring that Edo State is safe for all residents.
