A coalition of women under the banner Rivers Women United for Sim (RWUS) staged a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt on Thursday, calling for the immediate restoration of peace in Rivers State and the reinstatement of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The demonstrators, who turned out in large numbers, described Rivers as a historically peaceful state now disrupted by political turmoil. They urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the lingering crisis and reinstate Fubara, whom they insist has committed no offense warranting his suspension.
Bearing placards with messages such as “Bring back Fubara,” “Save our democracy,” and “Is the law different for Rivers State?” the women marched from Aba Road to the Rivers State Government House. Many chanted solidarity songs and prayed for justice, describing themselves as concerned mothers and wives.
“This is not just about politics; it’s about our children, our families, and the soul of Rivers State,” one protester said. “Governor Fubara was elected by the people, and we demand that his mandate be respected.”
The demonstration is part of a wave of protests that began in March following the governor’s suspension. Similar rallies have been held across the state, with calls also for the reinstatement of his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and other suspended elected officials.
RWUS leaders emphasized that their movement is peaceful and driven by a desire to see democracy upheld in Rivers. They appealed to President Tinubu to act swiftly to restore order and democratic governance in the state.
