Bola Ahmed Tinubu Airport in Minna Designated as Alternative to Abuja Airport

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, has been officially named the alternative airport to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The declaration was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the inauguration of Overland Airways’ commercial flights from Minna.

Keyamo highlighted the airport’s untapped potential and modern infrastructure, describing it as suitable for large international aircraft. “The runway is an international runway; a 747 and a triple seven can use this runway. Why, over the years, this has been underutilised is still a puzzle,” he said.

He added that the airport meets global standards both structurally and operationally and expressed astonishment at its long-standing neglect.

“Our eyes are on this airport. By the powers conferred on me, I declare Minna Airport as the alternative to Abuja Airport. NCAA, FAAN, take note,” Keyamo stated.

This strategic designation is expected to increase air traffic to Minna and position the airport as a vital backup for Abuja, especially during peak traffic or emergency situations. It also marks a significant boost to northern Nigeria’s aviation capacity and economic connectivity.
