A suspected motorcycle thief was on Sunday burned to death by a mob along Akpehe Road in the Wurukum area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when two men were seen pushing a motorcycle suspected to have been stolen. A resident, Christian Asema, told Hobnob News that the motorcycle was recognized by a woman as one that had recently been snatched.
“They were pushing the bike along Akpehe Road, and when a lady identified it as the stolen bike, she immediately alerted some youths,” Asema said.
One of the suspects reportedly managed to escape the scene, but the other was apprehended by the angry mob and set ablaze before security operatives could intervene.
Efforts to reach the Benue State Police Command for confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls to the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, went unanswered at the time of filing this report.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over the rise in jungle justice in the region, with residents calling for stronger security presence and more effective law enforcement responses.
