In a stark illustration of Nigeria’s worsening unemployment crisis, over 11,000 eager applicants have applied for just 100 job openings at the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission. The application portal has been open for only three days.
Barrister Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, Chairman of the Commission, revealed the alarming number while speaking to journalists on Thursday. As of Thursday evening, 10,757 applicants had applied, and within two hours, by 10 p.m., the figure had surpassed 11,000.
The portal opened on April 7 and will close by midnight on Sunday, but the overwhelming response in such a short time has highlighted the severity of joblessness, especially among Nigeria’s youth.
“This massive response is not just about the popularity of the commission or the appeal of the job—it’s a wake-up call about the alarming rate of unemployment in our society,” said Barr. Rimin Gado.
He explained that the recruitment drive aims to bolster the commission’s manpower and enhance service delivery. However, he admitted that the overwhelming number of applicants reflects a deeper issue.
“With only 100 positions available, it’s heartbreaking to know that thousands of qualified citizens will walk away disappointed—not because they aren’t capable, but simply because the opportunities are far too few.”
This development has once again highlighted the growing issue of youth unemployment in Nigeria, where millions of graduates struggle to find meaningful employment in both public and private sectors.
Observers suggest that the situation in Kano reflects a national crisis that requires urgent and coordinated efforts from all levels of government to address.
