KANO — Health authorities in Kano State have confirmed a case of Lassa fever at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), sparking swift containment efforts across the state.
According to Salisu Inuwa, spokesperson for the hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control Unit, the confirmed case emerged after the hospital recorded two suspected incidents of the viral disease. One of the cases tested positive, while the other, unfortunately, could not be tested before the patient’s demise.
“Last week, we had two suspected Lassa fever cases. Sadly, the first patient passed away before a sample could be obtained. Lassa or another viral hemorrhagic fever was suspected,” Inuwa stated.
The confirmed case was identified on April 5 in the Garun Mallam Local Government Area. The patient, who arrived at the hospital voluntarily, was promptly tested and diagnosed with Lassa fever. This triggered immediate emergency protocols.
“In response, we initiated comprehensive screening of all individuals who had potential contact with the patient,” Inuwa added. “A few staff members exhibited mild, malaria-like symptoms but are stable and continue their daily activities under close observation.”
The Kano State Ministry of Health has been notified, and a contact-tracing team has been dispatched to Garun Mallam to monitor and manage possible exposures within the community.
“The Ministry has taken the lead on the contact tracing and is actively working to prevent further spread,” Inuwa confirmed.
He assured the public that the situation is being handled with the highest level of urgency and professionalism. “There’s no cause for alarm. We have the situation under control, and preventive measures are firmly in place.”
