Ketu Fruit Market Reopens After Overnight Cleanup — LASG Warns Against Future Violations

LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has officially reopened the Ketu Fruit Market for business after temporarily sealing it for failing to comply with environmental regulations.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, during an inspection tour of the Lagos Island Urban Regeneration Project on Friday.

Wahab stated that the market, which was shut down on Thursday, was reopened earlier today after the government observed significant efforts by traders to clean up the premises.

“Markets are the first point of contact for most residents, and cleanliness is non-negotiable,” Wahab said. “Following our intervention, traders worked overnight, and we saw commendable compliance levels. As a result, we unsealed the perishable section just about an hour ago.”

He further revealed that despite previous abatement notices served to the market, traders had failed to act until enforcement measures were taken. “We cannot allow continued defiance of environmental standards. However, we gave them the opportunity to make things right, and they responded,” he added.

Wahab praised the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for stepping in where Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators faced challenges. “LAWMA has been very proactive — their trucks were on-site this morning clearing out waste at the market,” he noted.

In the course of his inspection, the Commissioner also ordered the demolition of illegal shanties built on the drainage channel of King Ado High School, Ojo Giwa, and sealed off a building under construction at Idi Oluwo for obstructing drainage paths with construction materials.

On the broader environmental concerns, Wahab addressed the recent flooding incidents on Lagos Island, assuring residents that the government has robust flood management measures in place. He emphasized that the ongoing urban regeneration project would provide long-term solutions to persistent flooding in areas like Adeniji, Oroyinyin, Idumagbo, Ojo Giwa, Jankara, and Aroloya.

He also reiterated the Ministry’s firm stance on the ban of styrofoam products, emphasizing the dual approach of public awareness and strict enforcement. “We’ll continue our advocacy, but where necessary, sanctions will follow for those who fail to comply,” he warned.

Addressing the flood alert issued by the Federal Government, Wahab urged Lagosians to remain calm. “This is an annual occurrence, and Lagos is well-prepared to manage it,” he assured.
