KADUNA — In a high-profile closed-door meeting that has sparked political speculation, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside prominent political figures including former Governors Nasiru El-Rufai (Kaduna), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa), and Achike Udenwa (Imo), paid a visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna on Friday.
The meeting, which was not open to the press, drew attention due to the diverse political affiliations of those in attendance. While details of the discussion were not disclosed, Atiku, speaking to journalists after the meeting, clarified that the visit was primarily a courtesy and Sallah homage.
“We came here on a courtesy and Sallah greetings visit to President Muhammadu Buhari,” Atiku stated.
When asked about the presence of political heavyweights from various parties, Atiku responded, “I have the right to be friends with anybody, whether political or non-political — they are all my friends.”
Addressing growing speculation about a possible alliance or coalition among opposition figures, the former Vice President admitted that talks are ongoing regarding forming a stronger opposition bloc. However, he stressed that this was not the agenda for Friday’s visit.
“There is a plan for the major political parties to come together and form a strong opposition, but it is not part of this visit,” he explained.
The meeting, though described as a friendly visit, continues to generate buzz across political circles, especially in light of ongoing calls for a united front against the ruling party.
