The Benue Investment and Property Company Limited (BIPC) has officially taken delivery of the first batch of electric and solar-powered cars for its upcoming Green Wheels Taxi initiative, a landmark step towards modern, sustainable transportation in Benue State.
The vehicles, now received in Makurdi, are part of the direct gains from the strategic visit of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, Executive Governor of Benue State, and BIPC’s Group Managing Director, Dr. Raymond Asemakaha-CFA, to the People’s Republic of China in October 2024.
The initiative aims to revolutionize taxi services across Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo, by deploying eco-friendly, zero-emission vehicles that not only reduce transportation costs but also improve environmental standards.
Speaking during the official handover, Dr. Asemakaha noted that the company has so far received 20 electric and solar-powered vehicles, with a target of 100. He disclosed that commercial operations would commence by the end of the month.
“This is a bold move by Governor Alia to make transportation more affordable, just like the ongoing interventions in bread and water pricing across the state,” the GMD said.
He highlighted that the vehicles are equipped with modern features including geofencing technology, a built-in CCTV system for security, and an intelligent control system. A single charge, he added, will power the cars for up to 500 kilometers.
To ensure easy access, BIPC is also developing a dedicated mobile app that will allow users to book rides 24/7 and track vehicle movement in real time.
Additionally, plans are underway to establish an assembling and charging plant at BIPC’s Mergemax CNG/Petrol Station near the company’s head office. The facility will also serve as a hub for routine maintenance.
The Green Wheels project is poised to create job opportunities for Benue youth, enhance urban mobility, and promote cleaner, greener cities in line with the state’s inclusive governance vision.
With this move, Benue State positions itself as a trailblazer in eco-conscious transportation solutions in Nigeria.
