NSCDC Benue Command Takes Proactive Steps to Avert Uromi-Like Incident

In a swift and proactive response to avert potential communal unrest, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Benue State Command, has taken strategic measures to address growing tensions surrounding the arrival of a group of 19 young men of northern extraction in the state.

Acting on credible intelligence, the Command received reports of the group’s movement through Makurdi and their presence at Adoka Motor Park. The individuals, suspected to be of Hausa/Fulani origin, were raising concern among local residents due to recent security challenges attributed to herder-related violence.

The State Commandant, upon receiving the information, immediately ordered discreet monitoring and a detailed evaluation to verify the group’s origin, destination, and purpose. Findings revealed that the group hailed from Lafia in Nasarawa State and were not headed to Adoka in Otukpo LGA, as initially feared, but rather to Jato-Aka in Kwande LGA—an area recently plagued by attacks and heightened security concerns.

Though the group claimed they were en route for mining activities, the absence of clear documentation or established contact with any mining firm raised red flags. Intelligence also indicated growing hostility among locals in both Otukpo and Kwande LGAs, with potential plans to confront the group due to fears of further violence.

To prevent a recurrence of the tragic Uromi incident in Edo State, where a misunderstanding led to violence against travelers, the Benue NSCDC Commandant promptly ordered that the individuals be taken into protective custody. This move aims to clarify their intentions, verify their point of origin, and ensure peace is maintained in the host communities.

The Command has since opened a line of communication with the alleged mining company based in Jato-Aka. Invitations have been extended for consultation, verification, and further profiling to establish the legitimacy of the group’s claims.

Upon completion of a thorough investigation, the NSCDC has pledged to facilitate the safe return of the individuals to their home state if no credible link is established.

The NSCDC Benue State Command reassures the public of its commitment to peace, security, and proactive conflict prevention, especially in times of heightened communal sensitivity.
