The former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Chief George Moughalu, has emerged as the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election on November 8, 2025.
At the Labour Party primary held in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, Moughalu secured 573 votes, defeating his only rival, Mr. John Nwosu, who received 19 votes.
The primary, observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and various observers, had 649 delegates in total, with 601 accredited voters. Out of these, 592 valid votes were cast, while 5 votes were deemed invalid.
In his acceptance speech, Chief George Moughalu expressed his willingness to work with his opponent, John Nwosu, emphasizing that unity among party stakeholders would guarantee LP’s victory. “With unity among the stakeholders, LP victory would be assured,” he said. He also highlighted his readiness to challenge the incumbent governor, Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, citing his vast experience in public service and politics as key strengths. “My capacity and experience in public service and politics is a surebet,” he added.
Moughalu thanked the delegates and the party’s national and state working committees for their efforts in making the primary a success.
Earlier, Barr. Bennett Etanabene, the chairman of the LP primary election committee and returning officer, commended the delegates for their proper conduct throughout the election. He urged them to remain focused, saying they should not rest on their laurels. “Rally round Moughalu to work for his victory,” he advised. He also encouraged the delegates to mobilize voters ahead of the November 8 governorship election, asserting that LP had a “one hundred percent chance of winning,” pointing to the party’s strong representation in the Senate, House of Representatives, and the presidential candidate.
