In a rapid response operation, the Bauchi State Police Command successfully averted a potential violent clash between two Islamic sects mere hours after the funeral of renowned Islamic cleric, Dr. Abdulaziz Idris Dutsen-Tanshi.
The incident unfolded on Friday when inflammatory remarks, allegedly made by Ahmad Isa Jaja, Chief Imam of the Galli Mosque, during his sermon in the Jahun area of Bauchi Metropolis at approximately 2:45 p.m. on April 4, 2024, sparked outrage among followers of the late cleric. The sermon, deemed offensive, prompted agitated supporters to storm the mosque in protest.
Newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sani-Omolori Aliyu, promptly intervened by calling for calm and directing the State Intelligence Department (SID) to launch a thorough and discreet investigation into the matter. Acting swiftly, he deployed a tactical unit led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Dutsen-Tanshi Division to the scene.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by CSP Ahmed Wakili, Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Police Command, the police managed to de-escalate the situation effectively. “The officers safeguarded both the Chief Imam and members of the congregation, dispersing the agitated crowd peacefully,” Wakili stated. The Chief Imam was taken into protective custody as part of the effort to ensure his safety while investigations continue.
Commissioner Aliyu underscored the vital responsibility of religious leaders to exercise their freedom of expression with caution and integrity. “We urge all religious leaders to refrain from making inflammatory, abusive, or derogatory statements from the pulpit. Their role is pivotal in fostering peace, mutual respect, and tolerance across our communities,” he declared.
As the SID conducts its inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, the Bauchi State Police remain committed to maintaining peace and preventing any escalation of sectarian tensions in the region.
