Edo State Gubernatorial candidate 2024 Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie joined other distinguished Nigerians in a thought-provoking discussion on “The Role of Opposition Parties in Nigeria’s Democracy.” The discussion, aired on ITV Radio, explored the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s opposition parties and their impact on the nation’s political landscape.
Dr. Aikoriogie emphasized that opposition parties are crucial for a functioning democracy. “In a robust democracy, opposition parties must act as watchdogs, ensuring that the government’s actions align with the will of the people. They offer alternatives, criticize policies, and provide necessary checks and balances,” he explained.
Once Nigeria’s dominant opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) now faces internal crises and leadership struggles, weakening its ability to challenge the ruling government. Similarly, the Labour Party, which once emerged as a potential third force, has failed to maintain its momentum due to organizational weaknesses.
As the PDP and Labour Party struggle, the SDP and ADC has been gaining traction. Dr. Aikoriogie described the party as the “new bride” in Nigerian politics, appealing to citizens frustrated with the current political order. “The SDP and ADC’s focus on unity and economic progress makes it a viable alternative,” he noted.
The state of opposition politics has significant implications for democracy and governance in Nigeria. Aikoriogie warned that without a strong opposition, the ruling government could act without accountability. He also highlighted shifting political alliances that could shape the 2027 elections, suggesting that the SDP and ADC if properly structured, could emerge as a formidable force.
Despite the potential for unity, opposition parties often struggle with ideological differences and self-interest, making cohesion difficult. To regain the electorate’s trust, Aikoriogie recommended that opposition parties focus on unity, clear leadership, and consistent engagement with the people. “A credible and united opposition is essential for strengthening democracy in Nigeria,” he concluded.
As Nigeria moves toward the next election cycle, the ability of opposition parties to overcome their challenges and present a viable alternative will be crucial in shaping the country’s democratic future.
