House of Reps Condemns Uromi Killings, Calls for Justice and National Dialogue

The House of Representatives has condemned the killing of travellers in Uromi, Edo State, calling for justice. On Friday, 16 travellers of northern origin were attacked and killed when their vehicle was set on fire by a mob. In a statement on Saturday, the House’s spokesman, Akin Rotimi, described the incident as a serious human rights violation.

The statement acknowledged directives from President Bola Tinubu and Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for an urgent investigation. The House urged security agencies to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those responsible. “The House notes the intervention of security agencies, which led to the rescue of survivors and the arrest of some suspects. However, justice must not only be swift but also thorough. Those responsible for inciting, enabling, or carrying out this heinous crime must be fully held accountable to deter future occurrences.”

Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, strongly condemned the killings, calling them “Barbaric, cowardly, and unacceptable,” and stressed that “Such acts of brutality have no place in a society that upholds the sanctity of life – a fundamental principle deeply rooted in both Islamic and Christian teachings.” He expressed deep concern that such violence could occur in Nigeria despite the country’s religious teachings about the sanctity of human life.

Abbas urged Nigerians to show restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. He called for a collective effort from security agencies, community leaders, and citizens to prevent such incidents in the future. He also highlighted the need for a broader national discussion on mob violence, extrajudicial killings, and ethnic profiling, which pose a threat to peace and unity. “Beyond immediate justice, this tragic incident underscores the urgent need for a national conversation on mob violence, extrajudicial killings, and ethnic profiling, which threaten our collective peace and unity.”

The House called for better intelligence gathering and stronger response strategies from security agencies to prevent mob violence and ensure the safety of all Nigerians, regardless of their background. It urged “Community leaders, religious institutions, and traditional rulers to actively foster mutual understanding, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law within their communities” and encouraged civil society and the media “to promote legal awareness, civic responsibility, and objective reporting to combat mob violence and uphold justice.”

The House also warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, stating that such actions weaken democracy and social harmony. While extending condolences to the victims’ families, it reaffirmed its commitment to justice and the protection of all Nigerians. “Mob violence, extrajudicial killings, and ethnic targeting have no place in a civilised society. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and stand in solidarity with all those who seek justice and peace. As representatives of the people, we remain resolute in our duty to protect the fundamental rights of every citizen and ensure that no act of lawlessness goes unpunished.”
