Makinde Backs Sharia Panel in Oyo, Says No Plan to Challenge Legality

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that he is not opposed to the sitting of Sharia panels in the state and has no intention of challenging their constitutionality in court.

Speaking during the 2025 Iftar programme organized by the state government at the Government House in Ibadan on Wednesday, Makinde emphasized that the Sharia panel could serve as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism, reducing the burden on conventional courts.

His remarks came in response to concerns about the legitimacy of the Sharia panel, which was recently established in Oyo town. The Chairman of the Sharia Committee of Oyo Land, Dr. Rafiu Bello, had earlier confirmed that the panel had commenced sittings.

“I read in the newspaper that I would go to court for interpretation on the Sharia panel, but that is not my position. My position is that we will support anything that is in our Constitution,” Makinde stated.

The governor stressed the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence, urging residents not to allow political elements to use religion to divide them.

“My administration is focused on ensuring religious harmony and total unity in the state. We will encourage alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. However, for any enforcement or legal clarity, the courts recognized by the Constitution remain the final authority,” he added.

The event, which marked the sixth edition of the Iftar programme since Makinde assumed office in 2019, was attended by prominent personalities, including former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, and several religious and traditional leaders.

The Chief Imam of the Oyo State Government House Mosque, Adebayo Rufai, praised Makinde’s leadership and commitment to religious inclusivity, praying for divine blessings upon his administration.

With the next election cycle approaching, Makinde cautioned against divisive politics and reassured residents of his commitment to long-term development projects that will benefit future generations.
