FG Declares March 31 and April 1 as Public Holidays for Eid-el-Fitr

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays in observance of Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan.

In an official statement issued by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the government extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim faithful for completing the month-long fast. Emphasizing that Ramadan is more than just abstaining from food, the minister highlighted its deeper significance—fostering discipline, compassion, and spiritual growth. These core values, he noted, are intended to inspire Nigerians long after the holy month concludes.

“Let this Eid be a moment of renewal—a time for us to strengthen our bond as Nigerians, regardless of our religious or ethnic backgrounds,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo remarked, urging citizens to use this period for reflection and unity.

As the holiday draws near, communities across Nigeria are busy preparing for the festivities. Families are organizing communal prayers, festive meals, and acts of charitable giving, while local businesses anticipate a surge in activity driven by holiday shoppers. The celebration is expected to boost economic activity in markets and stores nationwide.

Security agencies have been placed on high alert to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration. Authorities have appealed to citizens to observe the festivities responsibly and to remain vigilant, reinforcing the importance of maintaining law and order during the holiday period.

Eid-el-Fitr, meaning the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is a significant Islamic celebration observed by millions around the world. The festival traditionally begins with special prayers held at mosques and designated prayer grounds, followed by communal feasting and generous acts of charity, particularly aimed at assisting the less fortunate.

The government’s declaration of these public holidays underscores the broader message of the season: an opportunity to reflect on the spirit of togetherness and to promote peace, stability, and prosperity across Nigeria. Citizens are encouraged to extend kindness and support to one another, carrying forward the spirit of Ramadan in their daily lives.
