The Benue State Government has announced mandatory registration for all recyclers operating in the state, citing rising concerns over theft and criminal activities linked to scavengers.
In an official notification addressed to the Chairman of the Scavengers Association of Nigeria, Benue State Chapter, the Office of the Personal Assistant to the Governor on Community Relations and Mobilization stated that all recyclers, popularly known as Baba Boiler/Iron Condemn, must register with the state government.
According to the statement, recyclers will be required to obtain identity cards and operational licenses from the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Relations and Mobilization. Additionally, the Bureau of Homeland Security will vet and profile all applicants to monitor the influx of migrants and track potential crimes associated with recyclers.
“This issue has lingered for quite some time in the state now and calls for concern and prompt action,” said Godwin Denen, the Personal Assistant to the Governor on Community Relations and Mobilization.
The government warned that failure to comply with the registration process would lead to the involvement of security agencies for prompt arrest and investigation. Further details on registration procedures and deadlines will be communicated soon.
The move is aimed at curbing theft and ensuring accountability among recyclers while maintaining environmental sustainability in Benue State.
