Contraceptive Alert: NAFDAC Exposes Fake Injection Ring in Northern States

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a critical warning regarding the circulation of counterfeit Noristerat Injection 200mg, a contraceptive product, in Kano, Bauchi, and Niger States. Hobnob News reports that the agency has uncovered a dangerous scheme involving mislabeling and repackaging of non-contraceptive drugs as the genuine product.

NAFDAC, in a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) platform, revealed that the fake Noristerat Injection is being distributed, particularly at the Coordinated Wholesale Centre in Kano. The agency emphasized the grave health risks posed by the counterfeit product, which is essentially Chlorpheniramine and Dexamethasone injection ampoules repackaged and falsely labeled.

“The counterfeit Noristerat Injection 200mg has been found in Kano, Bauchi, and Niger States. This poses a serious health risk as unsuspecting women may be using a product that offers no contraceptive protection,” NAFDAC stated.

In a positive development, NAFDAC announced that the individual responsible for the illegal repackaging operation has been apprehended. The agency assured the public that they are actively working to remove the fake product from circulation.

To aid consumers in identifying the counterfeit product, NAFDAC provided the following details:

  • Manufacturing Date: September 2022
  • Expiry Date: September 2027
  • Lot Number: KT02TTK

Genuine Noristerat 200mg is a contraceptive injection designed to provide eight weeks of pregnancy protection. The counterfeit version poses a significant risk of unintended pregnancies and other potential health complications.

NAFDAC urged healthcare providers, pharmacists, and the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspected counterfeit products to the agency. “We call on healthcare providers, pharmacists, and the general public to report any suspicious Noristerat Injection to NAFDAC. Your cooperation is vital in protecting public health,” the statement emphasized.
