IGP Egbetokun Issues Stern Warning to Police Officers Over Unlawful and Prolonged Detentions

In a strong move to address ongoing concerns over human rights violations, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a firm directive to all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, warning against unlawful and prolonged detentions of citizens. The IGP emphasized that any officer found guilty of violating constitutional provisions on individual rights would face stringent disciplinary action.

This warning was made public in an official statement released on Sunday and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The statement underscores the police leadership’s unwavering commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring that due process is strictly followed in all cases of detention.

Titled “Human Rights: IGP Warns Personnel Against Incessant, Unlawful Detentions,” the statement served as a clear reminder to all officers that the constitutional rights of every Nigerian must be respected, particularly during pre-trial procedures.

IGP Egbetokun highlighted that Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantee the right to dignity and personal liberty, stressing that adherence to these legal provisions is not optional, but a mandatory duty of every law enforcement officer.

“Adhering to legally stipulated detention periods is not just a procedural formality—it is a critical component of safeguarding the dignity and liberty of individuals. Unlawful detentions not only breach legal boundaries but also corrode public confidence in the police,” the IGP stated.

He further warned that police officers who engage in arbitrary or excessive detentions would face severe consequences, emphasizing that such actions are detrimental to public trust and the credibility of the Force.

Egbetokun called for a renewed culture of accountability and professionalism within the police force, urging officers at all levels to maintain the highest ethical standards in their interactions with the public. According to him, the way forward is to prioritize human rights, which will ultimately foster stronger, trust-based relationships between the police and the communities they serve.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated humanely and in full compliance with the law. The current leadership is determined to maintain law and order while also championing the protection of individual rights and dignity,” the statement affirmed.

This directive follows mounting public concern over reports of arbitrary arrests and detentions carried out by some police officers across the country. Many Nigerians have expressed fears over a growing disregard for legal detention limits, calling for reforms and stronger enforcement of officers’ accountability.

By taking this decisive stance, the IGP signals a shift towards a more rights-conscious and people-centered policing approach, one that recognizes that effective law enforcement must go hand in hand with respect for the rule of law and the protection of human rights.

Hobnob News will continue to monitor the situation and report on how the Nigeria Police Force implements these new directives in the days ahead.
