Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has claimed that Nigerian security officials are planning to arrest her upon her return to Nigeria.
She alleged that the move is connected to her participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in New York on 11 March, where she spoke about her suspension from the Senate and raised allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
She revealed this in a phone interview on Sunday.
“I’m aware there are plans underway to have me arrested as soon as I arrive Abuja,” said Mrs. Akpoti-Uduaghan, who remains in the United States after the IPU meeting.
However, she did not specify which security agency was behind the alleged plot.
Reports indicate that Nigeria’s internal and external intelligence agencies have begun investigating how she gained access to the meeting without an official nomination.
According to a senior government official and two top security sources familiar with the investigation, the State Security Service (SSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) are working to determine how she attended the international event without approval, who facilitated her accreditation, and whether her participation was orchestrated by interest groups to embarrass Nigeria, its government, and its people.
