The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, has reaffirmed the authority of police officers to conduct thorough searches of passengers’ belongings during stop-and-search operations. His response follows public outcry over a recent incident in which officers meticulously inspected travelers’ luggage, including sealed waybill packages, during a journey from Benin to Owerri.
A viral video shared on Wednesday captured the moment officers halted a commercial vehicle and spent nearly an hour searching passengers’ bags, causing frustration among travelers, including mothers with children. The video sparked heated debates online, with many questioning the necessity and legality of such intrusive searches.
In response, Edafe took to social media on Thursday to justify the officers’ actions, stating that the police have full authority to inspect all items, including waybills, during security checks. He dismissed concerns over privacy violations, arguing that such measures are crucial in preventing crime.
“What if they had recovered Beretta pistols and ammunition while carrying out this thorough search? Would you be asking this question?” Edafe retorted, challenging critics to consider the security implications.
He further clarified that while male officers are not permitted to conduct physical body searches on women, they are legally allowed to inspect their belongings.
“The police were right and can search all items, including waybills, during stop-and-search operations. And yes, they can search the belongings of a woman. They are only not allowed to search a woman physically if they are male officers, but not their properties. Are we clear?” he asserted.
The statement has ignited mixed reactions, with some supporting the police’s stance on security enforcement, while others see it as an abuse of power that causes unnecessary delays and inconvenience to law-abiding citizens.
As the debate continues, many Nigerians are calling for a clearer framework on police search procedures to balance security measures with respect for citizens’ rights.
