Nigerian Innovator Stanley Anigbogu Wins 2025 Commonwealth Youth Award for Advancing Renewable Energy Solutions

London, March 13, 2025 —

Nigerian entrepreneur Stanley Anigbogu has been named the 2025 Commonwealth Young Person of the Year at the annual Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work, held in London.

Anigbogu, the Founder and CEO of LightEd, was recognized for his pioneering efforts in converting waste materials into solar-powered innovations, providing clean and sustainable energy solutions to over 10,000 refugees across Africa. His initiative is rooted in his personal experiences with energy poverty, driving his commitment to sustainability and climate resilience.

Innovative Solutions for Energy and Environmental Sustainability

Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, LightEd focuses on addressing energy insecurity through sustainable technology. Since its inception, the initiative has:

  • Recycled over 20,000 kilograms of waste, contributing to environmental conservation.
  • Trained more than 6,000 students in renewable energy and sustainability practices.
  • Developed solar-powered solutions aimed at improving energy access in underserved communities.

The award was presented by Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, at a distinguished ceremony at Marlborough House, London, attended by government officials, youth leaders, and stakeholders from across the Commonwealth.

Recognition and Commendation

In addition to being named the Commonwealth Young Person of the Year, Anigbogu also received the top regional award for Africa, securing a total cash prize of £5,000.

Acknowledging his contributions, Secretary-General Scotland praised his innovative approach to addressing multiple challenges:

“Stanley’s work not only provides access to clean energy for vulnerable communities but also tackles environmental degradation by repurposing waste materials. His leadership and ingenuity exemplify the power of youth-driven solutions in achieving sustainability and economic empowerment.”

She further commended his impact, stating,

“Through LightEd, he is not only fostering climate resilience but also equipping young people with essential skills for the green economy. His work stands as a testament to the transformative potential of youth innovation in the global energy transition.”

Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Anigbogu remarked:

“This award is a great honor and a call to further action. I am privileged to stand alongside fellow changemakers, each dedicated to developing impactful solutions that address pressing global challenges. With the support of the Commonwealth, I look forward to scaling our initiatives to drive greater transformation.”

Other Honorees and Global Recognition

Alongside Anigbogu, four other regional winners were awarded £3,000 each for their outstanding contributions:

  • Murad Ansary
  • Nicholas Kee
  • Zubair Junjunia
  • Bethalyn Kelly

Additionally, the Khalili Foundation, a long-standing partner of the Commonwealth, presented PEACE Awards to five young leaders for their efforts in promoting peace and equity. Each recipient was awarded £2,000, with Professor Nasser Khalili, Chairman of the Khalili Foundation, highlighting their role in fostering global harmony.

“Youth-led initiatives focused on dialogue and cooperation are essential in building a more inclusive and peaceful world. These young leaders serve as an inspiration for communities across the Commonwealth and beyond.”

The Commonwealth Foundation also contributed £30,000 towards the awards, underscoring its commitment to supporting youth-driven development. Deputy Director General Shem Ochola lauded Anigbogu’s innovation and leadership, emphasizing the critical role of young visionaries in advancing sustainable development.

Empowering Future Leaders

From over 800 applications, the 20 finalists were selected through a rigorous evaluation process conducted by a pan-Commonwealth adjudication panel. Each finalist received a trophy, certificate, and £1,000 to support their ongoing initiatives.

The 2025 Commonwealth Youth Awards highlight the transformative potential of young leaders in driving sustainable development, climate action, and economic empowerment. Anigbogu’s recognition reaffirms the role of African youth in shaping a cleaner and more sustainable future, setting a benchmark for innovation and social impact on a global scale.
