Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to either step down or face impeachment.
During a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, Okocha criticized Fubara’s invitation to pro-Wike members of the Rivers House of Assembly, calling it a “Greek gift.”
Daily Trust previously reported that Fubara, who has been in conflict with the 27 lawmakers loyal to his estranged ally, invited them to a meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt, on Monday.
This invitation followed the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum for the governor to present the 2025 budget. The assembly had earlier issued another ultimatum demanding that Fubara dismiss commissioners and board members who were not screened by the House.
Additionally, the lawmakers summoned the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
A letter dated March 9, signed by Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and addressed to Speaker Mathew Amaewhule, indicated that the governor had acknowledged the Supreme Court ruling and was prepared to meet with the legislators.
The agenda for the meeting included discussions on securing an appropriate venue for assembly sittings, clearing outstanding allowances, presenting the budget, and addressing other key matters.
The Supreme Court’s recent verdict, which was expected to resolve the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, has instead intensified the conflict, with both factions interpreting it to their advantage.
At the briefing, Okocha accused the governor of disregarding the rule of law.
“The invitation to the lawmakers is a Greek Gift. The Supreme Court Judgement is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the Governor now is for him to resign or be impeached,” Okocha stated.
