Former Senator Ayodele Arise Sparks Controversy with Comments on Sexual Harassment

Former Nigerian Senator Ayodele Arise has stirred up controversy with his recent comments on sexual harassment. While discussing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Arise claimed that “every beautiful woman is subject to sexual gestures anywhere in the world”.

Arise, who represented Ekiti North Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011, suggested that the matter should have been handled privately rather than being made a national issue. He also stated that women often receive sympathy when making sexual harassment claims, and that even compliments can be misinterpreted as harassment.

The former senator’s comments have raised eyebrows, particularly in light of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition against Akpabio. Akpabio has denied the allegations, citing his past recognition as Nigeria’s most gender-friendly governor.

Arise also condemned the senate’s six-month suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling it “unfair” and “unlawful”. He argued that the suspension deprives her constituents of representation and that a two-week suspension would be more appropriate.

The controversy surrounding Arise’s comments highlights the ongoing debate about sexual harassment and gender equality in Nigeria. As the country continues to grapple with these issues, it remains to be seen how Arise’s comments will be received by the public and the political establishment.
