Mabel Segun, a trailblazing Nigerian novelist, writer, and tennis champion, has passed away at the age of 95. Her family announced her demise in a statement on Thursday, revealing that she died in the early hours of the same day.

Segun was a true pioneer, breaking barriers throughout her illustrious career. Born on February 18, 1930, she graduated from the University College Ibadan (now University of Ibadan) in 1953 with a degree in English Literature, Latin, and History. This achievement marked the beginning of a distinguished academic and professional career that would take her to various parts of the country and beyond.

Segun’s legacy is marked by her remarkable achievements and contributions to Nigerian society. She was a renowned writer, with notable works including My Father’s Daughter, My Mother’s Daughter, and Olu and the Broken Statue. She was also a champion athlete, excelling in table tennis and badminton, and a diplomat, having worked as the Deputy Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, Paris.

The family has announced that funeral arrangements will be published later. Segun is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Segun’s passing has left a void in the Nigerian literary and sporting communities, but her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
