Mercy Chinwo Sues Social Media Commentator for Defamation

Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has taken legal action against social media commentator Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, for alleged defamation. In February, VeryDarkMan accused Chinwo of diverting funds from shows without paying her former record label, owned by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu.

Chinwo’s lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, described VeryDarkMan’s comments as “libellous, malicious, and damaging” to the singer’s reputation. Olajengbesi argued that VeryDarkMan was not involved in the dispute between Chinwo and EeZee Tee, yet he falsely presented the matter in a way that tarnished the singer’s image.

The lawsuit, dated March 3, seeks a court order directing VeryDarkMan to remove the defamatory posts from all his social media platforms and publish an unreserved apology to Chinwo in two widely circulated national dailies and all his social media platforms. Additionally, Olajengbesi is seeking N1 billion as general damages for defamation, N100 million as punitive and aggravated damages, and N25 million as the cost of the suit.

This development comes amid an ongoing feud between Chinwo and her former record label owner, EeZee Tee. In January, Chinwo accused EeZee Tee of exploitation, threats to life, and spreading false rumors about her child’s paternity.
