The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged victorious in all 30 local government areas of Osun State, winning all chairmanship and councillorship positions. The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) announced the results on Saturday, despite warnings from the police and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to halt the process.
The election was marked by controversy, with the police sealing the OSSIEC headquarters in Osogbo and arresting some officials. However, the commission relocated to an undisclosed location and proceeded with the election, citing a ruling from the Osun State High Court in Ilesa that ordered elections for vacant chairmanship and councillorship positions.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, who cast his vote in Ede North LGA, described the process as peaceful and urged residents to avoid violence. However, tensions have been high in Osun State, with clashes between APC and PDP supporters resulting in at least six deaths.
The AGF had argued that the election should not proceed, referencing a Court of Appeal ruling on February 10, which overturned an earlier Federal High Court decision from November 2022. The ruling reinstated the previously sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen.
Despite the controversy, the PDP’s victory has been met with celebration from its supporters. However, the APC is likely to challenge the results, and the situation remains volatile.
