Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Board, Abdullahi Ganduje, has raised serious concerns over the state of infrastructure at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, describing some of the equipment as obsolete and unfit for a modern aviation hub.
During his maiden inspection tour of MMIA, the former Kano State governor expressed disappointment over the state of abandoned projects that have left critical aspects of the airport in disrepair. Ganduje emphasized the importance of continuous facility upgrades and visionary leadership in transforming Nigeria’s airports into world-class aviation centers that meet international standards.
Concerns Over Outdated Equipment and Abandoned Projects
Speaking on the condition of the airport, Ganduje noted that while international airports in developed nations thrive due to human capital, modernized infrastructure, and progressive management, Nigeria’s aviation sector still struggles with outdated facilities and incomplete projects.
“There are significant challenges that must be addressed immediately,” he stated. “A number of projects have been abandoned for years, not by the current management, but due to past administrative lapses. With rising costs of materials and economic constraints, the completion of these projects has become even more challenging.”
Highlighting the technological shortcomings, Ganduje pointed out that many of the airport’s operational systems are no longer compatible with modern aviation standards. He stressed the need for immediate interventions to revamp the existing infrastructure and ensure that the country’s busiest international gateway meets global benchmarks.
A Strategic Approach to Revitalization
Despite the setbacks, Ganduje commended FAAN’s management for devising a strategic plan to tackle the airport’s challenges. According to him, there is an ongoing effort to categorize and address the abandoned projects based on their urgency and economic impact.
“There is already a structured plan to resolve these issues. The focus is on scaling some of the abandoned projects and repurposing them for better utility,” he explained. “We are also looking at financing options to accelerate development. The goal is to ensure that MMIA competes favorably with international airports across the globe.”
Ganduje assured stakeholders that FAAN remains committed to repositioning Nigeria’s airports for improved efficiency, enhanced passenger experience, and greater operational effectiveness. He also reiterated that resolving infrastructure challenges at MMIA is crucial for boosting Nigeria’s aviation industry and strengthening the country’s reputation as a key player in the global air travel sector.

In light of these challenges, Ganduje called for collaboration between the government, aviation stakeholders, and private investors to drive sustainable improvements. He urged all relevant authorities to take proactive steps in addressing the infrastructural deficits that have plagued Nigeria’s premier airport for years.
