President Bola Tinubu has authorized the relocation of 29 correctional centers from urban areas across Nigeria. This decision, announced by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo on Friday, February 21, 2025, aims to reform the correctional system and enhance security. The announcement was made during the unveiling of new operational vehicles for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The relocation plan addresses the challenges posed by urbanization, as many correctional facilities, established decades ago, are now situated in densely populated areas. For instance, the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, established in 1914, has been encroached upon by urban development. Other facilities slated for relocation include the Agodi Ibadan Custodial Centre, Ikoyi Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Enugu Custodial Centre, and those in Akwa Ibom and Suleja.
This move is part of a broader effort to reform Nigeria’s correctional system, which has faced significant security challenges in recent years. Between October 28, 2019, and April 25, 2024, over 6,000 inmates escaped from various correctional centers due to successful jailbreaks, raising concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of existing security measures.
In addition to the relocation initiative, the government is investing in infrastructure and resources to bolster the NCoS. Minister Tunji-Ojo inaugurated 39 operational vehicles and five guard booths, which will be distributed to various custodial centers nationwide. These assets are intended to improve the transportation of inmates and enhance security at key facilities, including the headquarters of the NCoS and custodial centers in Kuje, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Ikoyi.
The Tinubu administration has also demonstrated a commitment to the welfare of correctional officers and inmates. Over 50,000 personnel have been promoted within the paramilitary services, addressing longstanding issues of career stagnation. Furthermore, the government has approved the establishment of a paramilitary academy to provide advanced training for officers, underscoring its dedication to comprehensive correctional reform.
By relocating these correctional centers and enhancing resources, the Nigerian government aims to create a more secure and efficient correctional system, better suited to address contemporary challenges and ensure public safety.
