Meranda’s Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, has dismissed growing rumors about the resignation of the Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. In a statement to PUNCH on Wednesday, Ajiboye clarified, “I’m in the office. The Speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from.” His remarks came in response to an online report alleging that Meranda had stepped down from her position, fueled by the circulation of a circular dated February 17, 2025, which suggested her resignation.
Upon closer inspection, the authenticity of the document was questioned as it lacked any official signature, leading to doubts about its legitimacy.
The rumors surface amidst ongoing tensions within the Lagos State House of Assembly, which has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since the controversial impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. A majority of lawmakers had removed Obasa from office, and he has since challenged the legality of his ousting. Obasa, who was impeached while abroad, filed a motion at the Ikeja Division of the State High Court on February 12, 2025, seeking an expedited hearing of his suit.
Obasa’s legal team, led by Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, is seeking multiple court orders, including a request for an accelerated hearing and a reduction in the time allowed for responses from the defendants, which includes the Lagos State House of Assembly and Meranda herself.
The political uncertainty in the Lagos Assembly has sparked concern as the leadership dispute continues to play out in the courts.
