Herdsmen Kill 20 in Two Days, NYSC Members Cry for Help in Benue State

A devastating attack by herdsmen has left at least 20 people dead and several others injured in Jato Aka Turan community, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the community are now crying out for urgent security help.

According to the corps members, the herdsmen launched a sustained attack between Sunday and Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in the community. The corps members, who spoke with SaharaReporters, lamented that the community is known for its security vulnerability, with armed men and ammunition passing through the villages in broad daylight.

The corps members also expressed frustration with the lack of support from the Local Government Inspector (LGI), who hardly visits the community except for monthly clearance exercises. The LGI reportedly told the corps members that if the attacks escalate, they should move to neighboring Adikpo community.

A Facebook user, Wase Richie Aondofa, posted about the attacks, sharing gory photos and calling for help from relevant agencies. “We are dying! My village, Jato Aka Turan, Kwande Local Government Area, is no longer safe. God may your will be done.”

The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Anene Sewuese Catherine, has yet to respond to requests for comment on the police action regarding the incident.

The attack has raised concerns about the safety of NYSC members serving in the community, with many calling for increased security measures to protect them.
