Despite the invasion by Department of State Services (DSS) officials, the Lagos State House of Assembly is currently in session, with Speaker Mojisola Meranda presiding over the plenary. The sitting began around 12:30 pm on Monday, amidst solidarity support from assembly workers.
Earlier in the day, DSS officials had sealed the chamber and office of the Speaker, sparking a physical confrontation with legislative workers at the exit door. However, the workers later overpowered the DSS officials, allowing the lawmakers to enter the chamber.
The crisis at the assembly deepens amid a leadership tussle between ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Meranda. The situation remains uncertain, with no fewer than 10 police vans stationed at the assembly gate.
Meranda, who became the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly after Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2024, is determined to continue with the assembly’s business despite the challenges.
The development has sparked concerns about the independence of the legislature and the rule of law in the state. The assembly’s workers and lawmakers have shown solidarity with Meranda, who is facing opposition from Obasa’s supporters.
