Patrick Doyle Criticizes Public Proposals as ‘Imbecilic,’ Citing Narcissism and Approval Addiction

Veteran Nigerian actor and broadcaster Patrick Doyle has criticized the trend of public marriage proposals, labeling them as “imbecilic.”

In a recent social media post, Doyle expressed his disapproval of individuals who stage such intimate moments for public display.

He stated, “Asking a woman to marry you is perhaps the most intimate experience any two persons can be engaged in outside of actual copulation.”

He further condemned the practice of live-streaming these events, remarking, “This new unwholesome trend of having an entourage on hand with video cameras live streaming the act is, in my view, imbecilic.”

Doyle attributed this behavior to a growing “epidemic of narcissism and approval addiction,” questioning whether such individuals “ever had any home training at all.”

Patrick Doyle, born on March 23, 1961, in Lagos, Nigeria, is a distinguished figure in the country’s media and entertainment industry.

He began his broadcasting career at the age of 20 with the Voice of Nigeria and later worked with the Nigerian Television Authority.

Over the years, Doyle has taken on various roles, including serving as a consultant for Silverbird TV.

He gained prominence in the 1990s for portraying pastors and religious leaders in Nollywood films. His notable works include “The Black Book” (2023), “Man of God” (2022), and “Isoken” (2017).

Throughout his career, Doyle has been recognized for his eloquence and commitment to storytelling.

He has also been candid about his views on societal trends, as evidenced by his recent comments on public proposals.

His critique reflects a broader concern about the influence of social media and the desire for public validation in personal matters.

Doyle’s personal life has seen both triumphs and tragedies. He was married to veteran actress Iretiola Doyle, with whom he has five children.

The couple confirmed their divorce in 2023. Despite personal challenges, Doyle continues to be an influential voice in Nigeria’s media landscape, using his platform to comment on cultural and societal issues.

His recent remarks on public proposals have sparked discussions about the balance between personal intimacy and public display, especially in an era dominated by social media.

Doyle’s perspective invites reflection on the motivations behind such public gestures and the societal values they represent.
