Christians in the North-West have expressed concern over their exclusion from the recently formed board of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC) under President Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement released by Elder Sunday Oibe, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), North-West Zone, the group urged the presidency and National Assembly to address the matter. “We wish to draw the attention of the presidency and the National Assembly to the fact that governance is fundamentally about inclusiveness in serving the people,” Oibe stated.
The statement highlighted that Christians represent a significant population across all seven states in the North-West. Despite any justifications for the omission, Oibe stressed that leaving Christians unrepresented in the NWDC is unacceptable.
He expressed dismay over the exclusion, noting that while former President Muhammadu Buhari faced accusations of nepotism and favoritism, concerns about religious bias have now emerged under President Tinubu’s administration.
“Christians in the North-West are an essential bloc in the Nigerian project and their interests cannot be ignored,” the statement emphasized.
The association called on President Tinubu to review the composition of the NWDC and include Christian representation. CAN stressed that indigenous Christian communities exist across all the North-Western states—Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, and Zamfara—each deserving representation in the commission.
