Unity: The Key to Benue’s Progress

Benue State, located in the heart of Nigeria, is a land of vast potential, rich in both natural and human resources. With fertile lands ideal for agriculture and a population teeming with talented, intelligent individuals, Benue has all the ingredients needed to be one of the most developed states in Nigeria. The state’s land is well-suited for growing a wide variety of crops, which, if harnessed correctly, could make it a major agricultural hub. Additionally, Benue’s people are gifted in various fields—from agriculture to academia, politics, and even the arts—making the state a melting pot of opportunity.

Historically, Benue has been a significant player in Nigeria’s development. During the military regime, several prominent individuals from the state held high-ranking positions, some even becoming candidates to govern the country. The state’s political history is littered with powerful figures who have left an indelible mark on national affairs. These include military generals, governors, senators, and other influential politicians from Benue’s various ethnic groups, such as Tiv, Idoma, and Igede. Notable names include General John Garba, David Mark, Senator Barnabas Gemade, and former Governor George Akume now the Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF. These individuals, among others, have been instrumental in shaping the trajectory of Nigeria’s governance and politics.

As Nigeria made the transition from military rule to democracy, Benue remained at the forefront of the nation’s political landscape. One of the highlights of this period was the leadership of Barnabas Gemade, a Benue indigene, who led the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) when it produced the president of Nigeria. Benue’s influence continued through the years, with figures like Senator David Mark, former Governor Akume, and others emerging as key players. From national ministers to influential senators, Benue has continuously made its mark on the country’s political scene. However, despite these many achievements, the state’s development has been hindered by a persistent issue—disunity among its leaders.

While Benue has been blessed with an abundance of natural resources and capable individuals, it has also suffered from a recurring problem: a lack of unity among its political leaders. This disunity is not necessarily physical, but spiritual in nature, and it has undermined the state’s potential for growth. While these leaders may have personal ambitions and sometimes act out of personal grievances, the underlying issue is much deeper. Political infighting, rather than cooperation, has become the norm in Benue. Leaders like Gemade and Akume, David Mark, and more recently, Ortom ,Alia a, have often been at odds with one another. These conflicts, while seemingly personal, are often fueled by external forces and interests that thrive on division.

This constant bickering and rivalry has prevented Benue from fully realizing its potential. It has created an environment where progress is stunted, as energy that should be focused on development is instead spent on political struggles. The time has come for Benue’s leaders to look beyond their personal interests and understand that their divisions are harming the state.

The real enemy, however, is not the individuals involved but the spirit of division that has plagued the state for so long. This divisive force is often stirred up by external interests, which seek to weaken the unity of Benue. If the state’s leaders—particularly influential figures like Akume, who currently serves as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Governor Alia—could put aside their differences and unite for the greater good of the state, the results could be transformative.

Unity is not just a political ideal—it is a necessity for the development of Benue. If our leaders were to work together, pooling their resources and efforts for the collective benefit of the state, Benue could be a model of progress and prosperity. We need to focus on long-term goals, such as securing more federal projects for the state. Benue desperately requires infrastructure projects such as an international airport, large-scale processing factories for our agricultural products, and better roads to facilitate trade and commerce. These projects are essential to creating jobs, boosting the economy, and improving the living standards of the people.

At this critical juncture, it is essential that we do not allow personal differences to derail the future of our state. Our leaders must put aside their grievances and come together, recognizing that the true strength of Benue lies in unity. If we succeed in bringing our leaders together, the possibilities for the state’s growth and prosperity will be limitless. This is the dream that we, as a state, must work towards.

To the youth of Benue: it is time for us to step up and play our part. We must move beyond the culture of online insults and divisive rhetoric that has plagued our state. Instead, let us unite and peacefully advocate for our leaders to put aside their differences and work together for the future of Benue. Our generation has the power to make a difference. We must not sit on the sidelines while our state languishes in division. Let us engage with our leaders—Akume, Alia, and others—from all three senatorial districts, and call on them to unite for the sake of our future.

I advise Benue youths to organize themselves, one million from each senatorial district, totaling three million youths. Together, we can appeal to Akume and Alia to put aside their differences for the good of the state. Rather than taking sides and insulting each other, we should work towards unity and progress.

This movement can be a powerful force in bringing about positive change in Benue State. By standing together, we can show our leaders that we are committed to peace, unity, and development.

It’s worth noting that efforts have already been made to reconcile Akume and Alia. The Tiv Traditional Council has successfully orchestrated a reconciliation between the two leaders, which is a step in the right direction . However, it’s essential that we, as youths, continue to advocate for unity and progress in our state.

To our political leaders: the time has come for you to rise above personal ambitions and put the interests of Benue first. The state needs you to work together. This is not a call for compromise on your principles, but rather a plea for collaboration for the greater good. Benue’s future depends on your ability to put aside your differences and unite for the common cause.

Religious leaders, we urge you to continue praying for the unity of Benue’s leaders. The power of prayer is immense, and we ask that you intercede on behalf of our leaders, that their hearts may be guided by God toward decisions that will benefit the entire state. Only with divine guidance can we hope to achieve the unity necessary for Benue to move forward.

To the traditional rulers of Benue: your role in fostering unity cannot be overstated. Your wisdom, guidance, and efforts to bring our people together in peace are crucial. Continue your work in encouraging dialogue, and mediate between our leaders. Your influence can help to heal the wounds of division and bring about the reconciliation that Benue so desperately needs.

The future of Benue depends on our ability to come together as one. We have the resources, the talent, and the potential to become one of Nigeria’s leading states. But that can only happen if we, as a people, choose unity over division. Let us work together—leaders, youth, religious figures, traditional rulers, and citizens alike—to build a Benue that is strong, prosperous, and united.
